Even though IвЂ™d made my first movie ( A Fistful of Fingers) and I was editing it, I wouldnвЂ™t have called myself a вЂfilm director.вЂ™ IвЂ™d say itвЂ™s the closest thing to synesthesia in a way that it wasnвЂ™t like I listened to вЂBellbottomsвЂ™ and imagined a car chase. вЂњThe reality is that the song sort of inspired the entire thing, because when I first heard that song, it was 1995, I was 21, I was living in London for the first time.

New York City rock legend Jon Spencer famously wrote the song вЂњ Here Comes the FuzzвЂќ for WrightвЂ™s earlier film Hot Fuzz, but an earlier hit with his namesake band was also hugely inspirational on Baby Driver, not just because Wright considers it вЂњ pretty much the greatest opening track of any rock album ever.вЂќ

(What Wright wasnвЂ™t aware of was a Kiss song, also called вЂњ Baby Driver,вЂќ which he kept being asked about when people heard the title of his movie. вЂBaby Driver,вЂ™ maybe I heard again and said, вЂOh, thatвЂ™s the perfect title for my movie-itвЂ™s about a young getaway driver!вЂ™ I always thought it should end on that.вЂќ I had the idea that I wanted to do a diegetic action-musical in that all the music in the film is happening in the scene. вЂњThereвЂ™s lots of things in this movie that were not suppressed things, but things that were bubbling away, but it wasnвЂ™t like I heard the song and came up with the movie. The movie is not based on the lyrics of that song, but there is that element of the character being sort of folklore-y in terms of this is somebody that tales are told of the вЂBaby Driver.вЂ™ ItвЂ™s something that gave me that kind of vibe of being a character of some renown, like kind of infamous, this fast drier thatвЂ™s known to the police but known by name.вЂќ вЂњItвЂ™s one of those tracks where I was always curious about the lyrics of it. So I knew that album VERY well, and I used to really like that track.вЂќ

They had a Motown вЂChartbustersвЂ™ album, some Genesis albums, some Peter Gabriel albums, classical music and Bridge Over Troubled Water. They had one Stones albumвЂ“the first oneвЂ“and then they had a bunch of Beatles albums, but they did not have Revolver, which was kind of funny to me. My parents had a box of 20 records, and that was it. вЂњI think вЂBaby DriverвЂ™ is the B-Side of вЂThe Boxer.вЂ™ I knew it because probably my first experiences with music was my parentsвЂ™ record collection.
